SOHO Mail Server
The internet mail solution for home and office networks
The SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) Mail Server is an internet standards mail server designed to provide email services to multiple clients on a small network
connected to the internet by a broadband connection. It performs internet SMTP collection and delivery, POP3 collection from existing mail accounts, and has local POP3 and
SMTP servers for communicating with mail clients on the local network.
The SOHO Mail Server runs in the background and can run as a system service. It supports multiple mailboxes and users and has flexible and configurable header and envelope
based routing for directing incoming email to appropriate mailboxes. Clients may use any preferred mail client that supports SMTP send and POP3 receive (Outlook, Outlook Express,
Windows Live Mail, Apple Mail etc).
The Mail Server can receive mail by acting as an SMTP gateway, allowing mail to be received directly from the internet. It can also connect to internet POP3 accounts periodically,
to collect mail. Incoming mail is stored on the server machine until it can be delivered to the client for which it is intended.
Mail is sent out by the Mail Server when needed, either directly to the recipient's mail exchange (MX) server or to an upstream gateway or ISP.
No limitations on accounts, mailboxes or users are imposed, but scalability is not a feature. If you've got ten or twenty mailboxes or users, it'll be fine. If you're an ISP or a
spammer, forget it. Somewhere in between it'll probably fall over!

Server Operation
Benefits
- Receive mail directly and immediately without ISP delays
- Email support across the whole network even if only one machine has internet access
- Email may be sent between local users without the delays of sending mail via the internet
- Route and deliver mail to different local mailboxes even if mail is collected from only one internet account/POP3 mailbox
- Route generic mail (eg sales@, enquiries@) to multiple local accounts - no longer does sales email have to go to one person on one machine
- Mail can be collected and received for all users irrespective of if they are online or not
- Send mail directly and immediately to a recipients mail server
- Use an ISP or upstream SMTP gateway as a backup if sending mail directly fails
- Local users can use their preferred email client
- Automatically forward or redirect copies of mail to another internet address (eg sending copies of email received at work to home)
- Reduce spam by routing on mail headers instead of, or as well as, envelope addresses
- Reduce spam by checking global and local real-time blacklists
- Bypass ISP and government snooping by using MX delivery and reception
